Where To Stay On Kauai, Hawaii

Are you planning a trip to Kauai and struggling to decide where to stay? 

When choosing where to stay for your vacation in Kauai, it’s essential to consider the activities you want to experience on this beautiful Garden Isle. Selecting accommodation in an area that doesn’t align with your vacation plans could lead to spending excessive hours in the car. While the views from the car in Kauai are stunning, it’s best to minimize time spent driving.

Kauai features a variety of areas to stay, each catering to different preferences and activities. The ideal location for your stay depends on what you want to enjoy. Whether you’re seeking easy access to the best beaches, a quiet retreat, or proximity to hiking trails, the island offers options to meet every need.

During my four visits to Kauai, I stayed in three hotels and rented two vacation rentals. Two of my trips were without kids, while the other two were family trips. After spending so much time on the island, I can confidently recommend the best area for each type of vacation.

I will also explain why I always split my stay between two areas of Kauai. Additionally, I’ve included a Kauai map below that shows every hotel, restaurant, and activity mentioned in this post, which you can save for later!

Flying Into Kauai

To reach Kauai, most travelers fly into Lihue Airport (LIH), located on the southeast side of the island. Depending on your starting point, you may have a layover in Honolulu, or you might be able to fly directly from the mainland USA.

While many visitors choose to stay in Lihue, I will explain in this article why I do not recommend it as your primary base for exploring the island.

Renting A Car On Kauai

If you plan to stay on Kauai for more than a day or two, I highly recommend renting a car. My favorite areas of the island, the North Shore and the South Shore, are quite spread out, making it difficult to fully experience the best of Kauai without a rental vehicle.

Rental cars are very affordable on the island, especially if you book in advance. I suggest using RentalCars.com, where you can compare prices from all the major rental car companies. They also have an excellent cancellation policy, typically offering free cancellation up to 48 hours in advance. Plus, they provide a price match guarantee!

North Shore: Natural Beauty Of Kauai

The North Shore of Kauai is truly a gem, with Hanalei Bay at its heart! This stunning crescent-shaped beach boasts an incredible surf culture that you can’t miss.

When you visit Kauai, spending time at Hanalei Bay and wandering the delightful town of Hanalei is an absolute must. You’ll find charming shops, mouthwatering restaurants, and breathtaking views all around. Hanalei captures the essence of Hawaii with its natural beauty and warm small-town vibe.

For adventure lovers, Kauai’s North Shore is a playground! You can hike the famous Kalalau Trail or snorkel at the spectacular Tunnels Beach. Plus, it’s usually quieter outside the peak seasons, perfect for a relaxing getaway. Embrace the laid-back atmosphere and soak in the beauty of this remarkable destination!

Where To Stay On The North Shore Of Kauai

Accommodations range from boutique inns to luxury hotels to vacation rentals.  You can stay in an area close to restaurants and shops or more remote. 

Hanalei Colony Resort

A few years back, my husband visited the beautiful island of Kauai and had a truly memorable stay at the Hanalei Colony Resort. He often shares fond memories of that trip, so when we finally started planning our first vacation there together, he immediately suggested returning to this special place.

The Hanalei Colony Resort truly lives up to its promise of being unspoiled, unplugged, and unforgettable! While there are no TVs or air conditioning in the units, the breathtaking views and fully equipped kitchens more than make up for it.

Although swimming at Hanalei Beach isn’t recommended due to strong currents, it’s the perfect spot for savoring morning coffee, enjoying a good book, going for lovely walks, or relaxing with a drink at sunset.

Plus, the resort is a fantastic starting point for exploring the stunning hiking trails of the North Shore and is just a short drive from the amazing snorkeling at Tunnels Beach. Exciting adventures await!

Princeville Vacation Rentals

Princeville is the most populated area on the North Shore. Known for its upscale resorts and numerous vacation rentals, Princeville provides convenient access to Hanalei Bay.

Despite being the most populated part of the North Shore, Princeville is quieter than the busier areas of the island, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking relaxation.

Another advantage of Princeville is its elevated location, which offers cooler temperatures and stunning panoramic views of the ocean and mountains.

My husband and I truly enjoyed our stay at the Hanalei Colony Resort, but we found it a bit too remote for trips with our kids. Instead, we opted to stay in Princeville, where we rented a condo and later a vacation home.

There are plenty of vacation rental options in and around the Princeville area, though hotel options are more limited. Princeville has a grocery store and a variety of restaurants to choose from.

If you’re looking for a more authentic Hawaiian experience than what Princeville offers, Hanalei is just a 15-minute drive away. Hanalei is the most charming town and my favorite place ever. I love the shops, restaurants, beaches, breathtaking views, and even the wild chickens! Everything about Hanalei captures my heart.

All things considered—price, location, and comfort—we prefer to stay in Princeville over any other area on Kauai when traveling with our family.

Things To Do On The North Shore Of Kauai

Tunnels Beach is located on the North Shore and is renowned for its golden sand and turquoise waters, set against the dramatic backdrop of the lush Na Pali Coast mountains. One of the main attractions at Tunnels Beach is snorkeling, as its extensive offshore reef creates a protected lagoon. This makes it an ideal spot for observing vibrant coral, sea turtles, and tropical fish, especially during the summer months when the waters are calm.

In the winter, Tunnels Beach becomes popular for surfing and kiteboarding due to the larger waves. Photographers and sunset enthusiasts will also appreciate the beach’s stunning scenery, particularly during the golden hour.

While there are no facilities directly on the beach, nearby Haena Beach Park offers restrooms and showers. Parking can be limited, so it is advisable to arrive early.

For those looking for adventure on land, the beach serves as a gateway to amazing hiking opportunities, including the nearby Kalalau Trail. I have wanted to hike the Kalalau Trail ever since I learned about it, and it remains on my bucket list.

During a vacation to Kauai with my husband, we hiked a portion of the Kalalau Trail and the connecting trail that led us to a breathtaking waterfall.

Pros and Cons Of Staying On The North Shore Of Kauai

The North Shore of Kauai is my favorite place. I love the vibe, food, views, weather, shopping, atmosphere, activities, absolutely everything.  If I could only visit one location for the rest of my life, it would be the North Shore of Kauai. 

I have nothing even remotely close to a con to say about the North Shore. 

East Side: Commercial

The East Side of Kauai, often referred to as the Coconut Coast, is a diverse and picturesque region known for its palm-lined beaches, charming towns, and convenient location between the island’s north and south shores.

This area includes Lihue, which is the island’s main town and is home to the airport. In Lihue, you’ll find government offices as well as major retailers like Target, Costco, and Walmart. Lihue is ideal for those looking for easy access to chain retail shopping, airports, and restaurants. However, if this is the type of vacation you’re seeking, you might be missing out on the true essence of Hawaii.

Marriott’s Kauai Lagoons

During my first visit to Kauai, my family and I stayed at Marriott’s Kauai Lagoons in Lihue. We traveled with four other family members and booked a 2-bedroom villa. The accommodations were comfortable, and having a full kitchen was very convenient. This hotel is an excellent choice if you need the space of a vacation rental but still want access to resort-style amenities.

Kapaa

Kapaa is the central town located on the east side of the island, known for its local charm and affordability. Accommodations in the area include budget hotels, vacation rentals, and small inns.

As one of the largest towns on the island, Kapaa offers a great mix of shopping, dining, outdoor activities, and cultural experiences. The main street is lined with boutique shops, art galleries, and cafés, making it perfect for a relaxed stroll or for picking up locally made souvenirs. We typically spend an afternoon exploring the shops in Kapaa when transitioning from the North Shore to the South Shore.

Things To Do On The East Side Of Kauai

Beaches such as Lydgate Beach Park offer family-friendly swimming areas protected by rock barriers, as well as playgrounds and picnic spots. Kealia Beach, located just north of Kapaa, is popular for surfing and beach walks.

On our first trip to Kauai we did a Kayak tour. I enjoyed the views while my husband got a great workout.

One activity on my to-do list for the East Side is a Mountain Tubing Adventure. A coworker of mine did this with her family and described it as an incredible experience.

 Pros and Cons Of Staying On The East Side Of Kauai

The East Side of Kauai is appealing to travelers who seek convenience and proximity to everyday amenities without the luxury price tag found in other areas. However, I found the East Side to be my least favorite place to stay in Kauai because it lacks the remoteness and unique Hawaiian atmosphere present in other parts of the island. Additionally, we spent too much time driving each day to access the beautiful beaches of the North Shore and Waimea Canyon. We only spent minimal time in Lihue, mostly for occasional meals and sleep.

South Shore: Luxury Resorts

The South Shore is the most popular vacation destination on the island, renowned for its abundant sunshine and luxurious accommodations. This area is more commercially developed, providing a wide range of dining and shopping options. The South Shore is ideal for travelers looking for resort amenities combined with easy access to beach activities.

Where To Stay On The South Shore Of Kauai

The area centers around the towns of Poipu and Koloa, where you’ll find luxury resorts, golf courses, and a variety of dining and shopping options.

Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa

The best hotel on the South Shore is the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa, a luxurious oceanfront resort located in Poipu. This resort is renowned for its stunning tropical gardens, saltwater lagoon, and expansive pools featuring waterfalls and a lazy river.

The Grand Hyatt offers an unforgettable Hawaiian getaway. We have stayed there twice because my kids love the pool and the waterslide.

Koloa Landing Resort at Poipu

Koloa Landing Resort at Poipu, located on Kauai’s sunny South Shore, is a family-friendly destination. The resort is known for its spacious villa-style accommodations, which include full kitchens, making it ideal for families or groups looking for comfort and convenience. Guests can enjoy one of the island’s largest pools, complete with waterfalls, slides, and cabanas.

Things To Do On The South Shore Of Kauai

Poipu Beach Park is the highlight of the South Shore. Its crescent-shaped beach features calm waters perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and observing Hawaiian monk seals lounging on the sand.

Na Pali Coast boat tours provide an unforgettable opportunity to experience one of Kauai’s most stunning natural attractions. With towering emerald cliffs, sea caves, waterfalls, and hidden beaches, this rugged coastline is a must-see destination. Many boat tours depart from Port Allen, which is conveniently located near the south shore, making it an ideal starting point for exploring the Na Pali Coast.

Pros and Cons Of The South Shore Of Kauai

With its natural beauty, family-friendly beaches, and convenient amenities, the South Shore is ideal for relaxation and exploration.

The South Shore has excellent accommodation options and is a good starting point for Na Pali Coast boat tours and Waimea Canyon.

The only con about the South Shore is that it lacks remoteness and the casual vibe that I enjoy so much on the North Shore. 

West Side: Outdoor Adventures

The West Side, also known as the Waimea Coast, provides a more secluded and rugged experience. It is home to Waimea Canyon, often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” featuring scenic overlooks and hiking trails. The small towns in this area offer fewer accommodations but draw visitors seeking outdoor adventures.

This region is ideal for those who prioritize nature, hiking, and less-crowded environments.

Waimea Plantation Cottages

I overheard someone on a boat excursion talking about their hotel, Waimea Plantation Cottages, and it sounded lovely. I immediately went to the website, and we will undoubtedly stay at this location on our next trip to Kauai. 

Waimea Plantation Cottages is a unique resort located on the western side of Kauai. It offers a nostalgic experience in a tranquil setting, set on 43 oceanfront acres. The resort features cottages built between the late 1800s and early 1900s, which have been lovingly restored to maintain their rustic charm while providing modern comforts, such as full kitchens and private lanais.

The property is adorned with lush tropical landscaping and expansive lawns, as well as a private black-sand beach, perfect for leisurely walks.

Things To Do On The West Side Of Kauai

Waimea Canyon, often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” is one of Kauai’s most breathtaking natural wonders. The canyon was carved by the Waimea River, resulting in dramatic cliffs, deep ravines, and vibrant red and green landscapes.

I found Waimea Canyon to be beautiful, and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to see it. While the views of the canyon were incredible, the drive to Waimea Canyon was challenging. Be cautious of the narrow winding roads as you ascend the mountain.

Many of the Na Pali Coast boat tours depart from Port Allen on the West Side of Kauai. A boat tour is the best way to experience one of Kauai’s most iconic landscapes. The towering emerald cliffs of the Na Pali Coast are an unforgettable highlight of any Kauai adventure.

Pros and Cons Of The West Side Of Kauai

The only part of the island I haven’t stayed on yet is Waimea, but it’s on my list for the next trip. I haven’t visited Waimea Canyon in 11 years, and I want my kids to experience its breathtaking views. I prefer to spend less time in the car, so staying in Waimea will be ideal for a day trip to the canyon, allowing us to enjoy more time in the ocean off the Na Pali Coast.

Final Thoughts About Where To Stay On Kauai, Hawaii

As you can see, choosing where to stay on Kauai depends not only on your budget but also on your vacation style and what you want to experience during your visit.

Most travelers choose to make the South Shore or East Side their home base, but they should also visit the North Shore and West Side.

I highly recommend staying in at least two of these areas so you can experience more of what Kauai has to offer!

How many days should I spend on Kauai?

As many as you can! I am biased, I love Kauai and will never have enough vacation time on the beautiful island. 

What’s the best time of year to visit Kauai?

I’ve been to Kauai in June, October, and November, and the weather has been wonderful every trip. If you can avoid visiting during peak season, summer, and holidays, you will have more of the island to yourself.
